TUBE HOUSE- A Heritage Resource of Hanoi Ancient Quarter, Vietnam

(The paper was sent to International symposium in Malacca- Malaysia, May 2011)

The Ancient Quarter, a downtown area with over a thousand years of history, is located in the heart of Hanoi Capital City. Historic and architectural vestiges combined with a traditional urban fabric give it a unique character as a part of the national heritage. Historically, the area and its evolvement have always been associated with Hanoi city’s existence from the 10th century up to now. The Quarter has an area of approximately 100 hectares (Map 1), consisting of a huge amount of individual assets, groups of buildings, rows of tube-houses and other cultural, religious-evolutionary construction structures. The purpose of this paper is to present a different view on the heritage environment of Hanoi Ancient Quarter; unknown development of tube- houses and its surrounding blocks.

Keywords: tube-house,  36 Old Streets Quarter, state/ private-owned tube-houses, cultural behavior
